Disney’s short film ‘Sanjay’s Super Team’ brings Hinduism to mainstream America

Our readers were intrigued by the premise of Disney’s upcoming short film Sanjay’s Super Team when we told you about it in April. Today we’re getting a great new look at the movie.

Disney is attaching Sanjay’s Super Team to Pixar’s second original film of 2015, The Good Dinosaur, this November. Ahead of a panel for Sanjay at San Diego Comic-Con later this week, the studio has shared two first looks at the short.

As previously reported by the Los Angeles Times in April, Sanjay’s Super Team finds a young boy learning about his family’s Hindu religion through the scope of a super hero lens. It’s only after daydreaming about super heroes existing within his religion does Sanjay begin to appreciate his father’s heritage.

The first photo depicts Sanjay prior to the start of his daydream as he stares into his television (while watching something super hero-related, presumably). His father practices his religion in the background:

The second photo finds him within his dream, turning three Hindu Gods named Hanuman, Durga, and Vishnu into super heroes. Sanjay looks terrified in the photo but we’re sure the Gods will have his back!

There’s a noticeable difference in the animation style of the two photos. The “real life” scene uses Disney and Pixar’s latest CGI animation style while the dream uses a cel-shaded style.

One of the best things about Sanjay’s Super Team is that it’ll bring Hindu life to mainstream America. Our part of the world still doesn’t see much related to Hinduism in pop culture.

In fact, director Sanjay Patel wishes he could’ve released this short much earlier in his life. “If I could, I would go back to the 1980s and give my younger self this short,” he said to the LA Times. “I want to normalize and bring a young brown boy’s story to the pop culture zeitgeist. To have a broad audience like Pixar’s see this … it is a big deal. I’m so excited about that.”

The Good Dinosaur and Sanjay’s Super Team open together in theaters this November.
