‘ History repeats itself : In 1492 was the year Columbus stumbled upon Hispaniola. He befriended the Taino, gaining their trust, went back to Spain, and reported the riches of Hispaniola. It was in the year of 1493, during his second voyage back to Hispaniola, that Spaniards came with the intent to subdue the Taino at all costs. Spanish war dogs attacked and killed Taino men, women, and children, and survivors were enslaved, then forced to mine gold. If a Taino slave did not return with their expected quota of gold for the day, one or both hands were cut off, and/or they were killed’. – Sarah Sunshine Manning
