Two Hindu men have been killed within 24 hours amid the rising anti-minority violence in Bangladesh. Despite evidence of the mounting violence, the interim regime of Muhammad Yunus has refused to acknowledge the issue.
A disturbing pattern of targeted violence is unfolding in Bangladesh and minorities, particularly Hindus, are bearing the brunt of it. In the last 18 days at least six members of the Hindu community have been killed in a series of targeted attacks. The latest victim has been identified as Sarat Chakraborty Moni, a Hindu shop owner. He was attacked at Chor-sindur Bazaar in Nar-sing-di. He was hacked with sharp weapons, critically injured and later died. Two days before the murder, Islamists demanded a large sum of money from Sarat, telling him that if he wanted to live in Bangladesh, he would have to pay jizya. This has raised serious questions about law and order situation in the country. It also raises the question whether the state has the wherewithal to conduct free and fair elections.
