Nepal has tightened security and imposed curfews in several districts after violence erupted in Sunsari district of Koshi Province. The unrest began after Muslims attacked the Hindu Kanwar Yatra over DJ music. The confrontation soon escalated into clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups.
Police opened fire while attempting to disperse the crowd. The attack resulted in three persons losing their lives and about 2 dozen people sustaining injuries. Among the killed are 24-year-old Om Prakash Mehta, 22-year-old Jai Prakash Mehta, and 19-year-old Ganesh Yadav
.The unrest has since spread beyond Sunsari, with violence and protests reported in Siraha and Dhanusha. Arson, vandalism, stone-pelting and clashes with security forces have damaged vehicles, shops and private properties. Authorities have imposed curfews across several sensitive areas. Police, the Armed Police Force and the Nepal Army have been deployed, while helicopters are being used to monitor the situation from the air.
The final rites of Om Prakash Mehta and Jayaprakash Mehta, who lost their lives in the Kaptanaganj shooting in Sunsari, were held on Friday night after post-mortem examinations at Koshi Hospital. Their bodies were taken from the hospital to their homes, where family members, relatives, and local residents gathered to pay their final respects. The funeral procession then proceeded to the site of the shooting in Kaptanaganj, where the final cremation rites were performed. Large numbers of mourners joined the procession, offering an emotional farewell and paying tribute to the two victims. Security personnel remained deployed throughout the procession and at the cremation site to maintain peace and public order.
