Thousands of worshippers took part in the annual Bagwal Mela at Maa Barahi Devi Temple in Uttarakhand, India, on August 28, participating in a centuries-old stone-throwing ritual. Divided into four groups, devotees used rocks, sticks and shields to pelt members of opposing teams until their leaders called a halt after about eight minutes. More than 140 people were taken to hospital with injuries to their heads, faces and legs. The ritual is held in honour of Hindu goddess Barahi, with devotees believing the traditional bloodshed fulfils an ancient religious offering.
