In Hindu tradition, the soul or atma is not limited to just human beings, but also can be born in other species, as we see with many Hindu gods taking the form of animals. Hence, it’s not surprising that a stray dog known as Kali, obviously named after the goddess, gave her life in true dharmic tradition to save the lives of 30 children from a rakshasa poisonous snake. Hindus also have festivals for dogs, and many Sadhus also have their dogs as their companions. We also see many Hindus taking their dogs to temples or including them in pujas at home. This is also why Hindus should be helping Hindu groups in India who are helping to save stray dogs and other animals.
Kali, a stray dog from India, is being remembered as a hero after sacrificing herself to save 30 children from a venomous snake. The incident took place on April 20, 2026, in Dhirakula village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. That morning, students had gathered near Sri Jagannath Sishu Vidya Mandir Elementary School, chatting as usual. At the time, the students were unaware that a poisonous snake was approaching them. Kali the dog sensed something was wrong. Instead of retreating, however, the well-loved village canine sprang into action to help protect the children. Villagers said she continued fighting despite being struck multiple times by the snake, believed to be a cobra.
The snake was eventually killed, and none of the students was harmed. But she suffered a bite to the mouth and later died as the venom from the snake bite spread. News of her death quickly made it through the village, leaving residents both grateful and deeply shaken.
To honour her sacrifice, villagers held a funeral ceremony for her. She was carried on a flower-adorned trolley, wrapped in white cloth, and laid to rest with full rites.
NDTV reported that one of the villagers said, “Kali saved the lives of our children and will remain immortal in our hearts.” Kali managed to prevent a serious tragedy, and with that, she’s remembered as a guardian to the children.
