On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed when hijacked planes struck New York and Washington. A decade later, Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was found in Pakistan, close to a military academy, raising questions about Islamabad’s role. No accountability followed, yet the United States continued to work with Pakistan on counterterrorism and regional security. Now, 24 years after 9/11, Washington has signed major trade, energy and security deals with Islamabad. Military engagement is back, investments are flowing, and Pakistan is being welcomed as a partner. Washington has hosted the Pakistani Army Chief at least twice this year. Has America forgotten Pakistan’s role in sheltering its most-wanted terrorist?
