February 1, 2025 – A Hindu Temple In London U.K. hosted a remarkable Health and Wellness Day, drawing over 550 attendees for comprehensive health screenings and holistic well-being services. Held at the Shiva Ji Hall and Community Centre, the event featured over 30 health services, offering full-body health checks, including BMI assessments, blood pressure monitoring, cholesterol and lipid testing, and diabetes screenings.

Attendees experienced a diverse range of wellness activities, from Reiki healing and yoga sessions to digital health education for the elderly, teaching them how to use the NHS App for managing prescriptions and booking online appointments. Also, Gen Z younger Hindus engaged in discussions on blood donation and the significance of nutrition in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The event was so impactful that it even caught the attention of Wes Streeting, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

A Visionary Behind the Initiative

Investigative efforts by HHR revealed that the driving force behind this initiative was a young and devoted Hindu, Rishi. Speaking to us about his motivation, Rishi explained:

“I work in healthcare, and my mother struggled to secure a doctor’s appointment due to NHS backlogs and delays. Fortunately, I had connections to help her, but I realised that many others lacked such access. This inspired me to create a one-stop shop where people could receive essential physical and mental health support under one roof.”

The event also introduced attendees to Kalaripayattu, the world’s oldest martial art, teaching children as young as six. Elderly attendees appreciated live interactive sessions led by health professionals on topics such as Ayurvedic medicine and obesity management—health concerns particularly relevant to the Hindu and Indian diaspora.

Reviving the Traditional Role of Temples

When asked why he chose a mandir as the venue, Rishi emphasised its historical significance:

“Traditionally, mandirs and gurukuls served as community hubs for learning about politics, health, martial arts, and spiritual growth. Colonial influences stripped these spaces of their multi-faceted roles, and it’s time we reclaim them.”

The success of the event has inspired Rishi and his team to expand the initiative, with plans to replicate the model in a local Ramgarhia Gurdwara and other mandirs. He hopes that others will follow suit, bringing similar initiatives to their communities.

Gratitude to All Involved

Rishi expressed his heartfelt appreciation to everyone who contributed to making the event a success. “I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all the services, GPs, doctors, and every volunteer who played a role on the day—from the cleaners to the way finders and the kitchen staff who prepared such wonderful food. A special thank you to my right-hand man, Ravie Ji, for coordinating and helping bring this event to life. Lastly, I am incredibly grateful to the World Council of Hindus for their unwavering support in making this event a reality.”

With its outstanding reception and tangible impact, this Health and Wellness Day has set a precedent for holistic community care, merging tradition with modern healthcare solutions for the betterment of society, this event has caught the eye of Wes Streeting the Secretary care Of State for Health and Social Care who stated ,

“The event is such a great example of a local faith group bringing people together to engage with healthcare and wellness in a trusted community space, I was so impressed with the variety of services on offer and the number of medical staff and volunteers who gave up their spare time to support the community”

The Hindu temple that hosted the event was the VHP Hindu Center In Ilford, East London. Also, a few members of the local Muslim community visited and praised the event. Hopefully, other Hindu temples will follow suit as the Hindu community suffers from many illnesses due to being unfit when ironically Hinduism also encourages physical fitness which somehow potbelly Hindu uncles giving long lectures on being Intellectual Kshatriyas seem to miss while suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, heart issues and other ailments . So time to become real Hindus on all levels.
